Mark Alan Greenberg began his career messing around with numbers and decimal places. Educated in the field of economics (BA Simon Fraser University 1993), Mark’s first studio was located in a downtown high-rise office tower and his artistic medium was finance. Entrepreneurial success can be traced back to the early 80’s doing event promotions while Mark was still attending high school in West Vancouver and followed him throughout his financial career. In 2003 Mark became partner at AVIDWORX Productions Inc., specializing in Audio Visual Interior Design for the consumer electronics market throughout North America. This was a pivotal time for Mark’s creative development, “...our clients were amazing. They let us create whatever we wanted and with any materials we could get our hands on. The learning curve was steep although it never felt tiring. I had an endless appetite for discovering new materials and new processes for manipulating them.” The creative seed was sowed and Mark began work on what would become his first collection, ‘Two Pieces Missing.’ The art community took notice and in autumn 2006 he was invited to exhibit in a series of group showings, earning Mark his first artwork sale. Over 300,000 recycled puzzle pieces were hand-applied while creating this first sculptural collection. The next chapter of Mark’s life beckoned him to India where adventures unfolded that would alter the course of his life path and deeply influence his art. In the spring of 2007 Mark was awarded a full scholarship to attend an artist residency at the Global Arts Village in New Delhi, India. At the conclusion of this residency Mark embarked on a journey of epic proportions riding 16,000kms on a 1950’s designed Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle through the Himalayan mountains to the southern-most point of India’s sub-continent. His two year chapter in India concluded by founding a studio workshop in south Delhi where, under the guidance of master sculptors, he studied the art of sand casting using traditional methods. Mark returned to Vancouver in 2009. Shortly after, crate upon crate began landing at the shipyards, holding cast treasures from his Delhi studio. Crafted from nearly 500 kg of reclaimed copper, this collection, entitled ‘Nature the Veil of Illusion,’ with thousands of delicate details is testament to the tradition of the casting masters who guided Mark.
The 2009 cast collection, ‘Nature the Veil of Illusion,’ is now available. Preview it here.
